Budget, Economics, Politics Will Play Role In Unemployment Numbers In Central Valley

More and more people are moving from expensive coastal towns and cities in California to the more affordable Central Valley regions - where homes and other amenities can be had at a fraction of the price of what it cost to live in the Bay Area. Just parking your car alone is hundreds in a large city.

The majority of the California State Budget is directed towards Education and Low-Income Aide ... both worthy things to spend money on. Those are where you see a majority of cuts when the gap to balance the budget is so wide. California has tried to pocket huge sums of money through Marijuana legislation - and possibly Online Poker for California residence. Both, if allowed to flourish,  would bring multiple millions of dollars in tax revenue - but at a high price in terms of morality and public image.

Chances are the state is going to have to rely on the Federal Government (or your tax dollar) to continue to loan money to the State and be extremely liberal on payback of that debt. Furthermore, the state will have to rely on long term, sustainable growth that helped develop the information age we all have been enjoying for the last 20 years.

If the state can manage to stay afloat and not tax businesses, students and YOU - to the point that you would want to leave this great state ... as even the 'cheapest' parts of California are quite expensive compared to most other places in the country. Hopefully we can all make it through this together, and make California a great place to live and raise a family.

The key cities in the central valley that would benefit the most from economic recovery would be Modesto, Stockton, Tracy and the surrounding area. Stockton has sports facilities that are some of the newest in the area and have had acts like Bob Dylan and Snoop Dogg perform. There are many jobs available in Stockton - but always be prepared to compete with many other applicants for the time being.

Tracy and the outlying area is one of the most popular places to live for people that work in Livermore, San Jose, San Francisco and the Bay Area. Home prices were extremely high during the peak years, but now they are back into the levels where it makes sense for a Bay Area Family to move to Tracy ... especially larger families where cost of living is high even for 6-Figure earners. Jobs in Tracy, CA tend to be more serviced based or educational - as most of the technical jobs are in the Bay Area.

Modesto, CA is in a great location for those that work in nearby areas. The city has grown much like Stockton has over the years, however - there is still a strong agricultural presence in the area thanks to successful companies like Gallo Wines and Foster Farms. There is a 'nightlife' in Modesto that helps high margin liquor sales going all year. Bartending, waiting tables and other gratuity type jobs are always a good option. From experience, a great place to work is Del Rio Country Club in North Modesto. Stop by and put in your application - they have many positions that come available during the year. For more, try this list of jobs in Modesto California.

There will be financial and political gridlock in California over the next few years, however if the people keep doing there best to survive - the best days are coming for California residences, especially the unemployed.

San Francisco Giants World Series Win = Bay Area Jobs

The Giants took Major League Baseball by storm during the 2010 Playoffs to win its first championship since moving to the city of San Francisco. The Giants have always drawn large crowds to their beautiful ball park which opened in 2000.

This season will probably be one of the most anticipated seasons in team history. That usually means brisk ticket sales from the start of the season - meaning lots of sell-out games next year. On the surface, this obviously means jobs within the organization selling tickets, serving sodas and hot-dogs during games and other jobs. However, the surrounding restaurants and shopping destinations will have even more foot traffic coming through the city next season for each game.

Look for more jobs to open up near the stadium as next season comes around. Thanks to the Giants - the city of San Francisco has an MLB Championship and more jobs.

Real Estate Jobs Still A Good Option For Valley Job Hunters

Flashback 4 or 5 years ago and the Real Estate business was flourishing in the valley. Not only was selling homes profitable commissions - contracting, construction, furniture, and insurance were other industries that benefited from lots of homes trading hands.

Then it all seemed to come to an end.

Barring any outside forces, it appears as if the home market in the Central Valley has reached its lows. We are now seeing Real Estate agents and related businesses hiring more employees to handle some of the increasing demand. The industry is now less desirable than it was in years past, making it easier to find a position compared to hotter job trends. Competition to sell homes is still high and fierce - but a good agent should be able to make money in any environment.

PMZ Real Estate, among others, regularly hire in the Central Valley - often referred to as the 'Foreclosure Capitol of the World'

Wall Street Earning Trends - May Lead To More Jobs

Investing in the stock market is probably one of the smartest things someone can do with money. Sure you can get burned by the occasional dip in the market that will happen after large run-ups due to economic factors such as the internet being born and home prices sky-rocketing. However, its not like people didn't loose jobs and careers at these companies either during the same time period.

The stock market has more to do with employment than most people think ... especially if you work for a public company. What was the first thing many companies did when 'numbers started looking bad' in 2008/09? They fired people...or 'reduced headcount' as the CEO's like to say. The #1 goal of a public company is to make money for its shareholders - not have happy employees - so remember that the next time your boss tells you how much they care about you. You might think that the big boy CEO can't be fired - but if enough shareholders make noise - he'll be gone faster than he's out of the office everyday to catch his noon tee-time at the country club.

The thing is - every good businessman (or woman) knows you need great employees to make a huge profit and grow as a company. In late 2008 and 2009 it was all about firing people so that the company expenses went way down to be in line with the lower consumer demand - who were paying $4.75 a gallon for gas. Now consumers are starting to show signs of life and companies are starting to see sales growth over last year.

So what's the problem?

You can't grow a company with a limited staff. Which is exactly the challenge CEO's and small-business leaders are facing now.  If you take a look at earnings from major companies ... cutting out all the GAAP and non-GAAP stuff .... you generally see that profits (dollars you take home) are up - but revenues (dollars that come in the door) are flat or sometimes down. Why is that? For the most part, I would suggest that they don't have the staff capable of growing the revenues much further than where they already are. (Which is a CEO's Death Sentence)

Since most companies went on a cost-cutting trip about a year ago, its not like they can just trim more cost to make the profits grow. They are going to have to attract new business by expanding the work force to handle demand - which also should continue to increase off lows. Its not like its going to be a big hiring party all at once...as most bosses do have regular matches at the golf club to attend to :) But its funny how these 'leaders of business' will copy each other when one of them makes a move. Trust me, if Google has a Press Release about hiring 200 new employees... you can expect the folks over at Yahoo/Microsoft will be doing the same a few months later. Its not like the major shareholders will call the competing company or anything and ask them how they will respond to the new jobs....(they will)

The moral of the story? The natural business cycle took us to highs higher that high in the 2000's ... its okay to take a breather for a while. In fact, its a natural and healthy thing for an economy to go through a downturn. In many ways it helps business and employers learn new training and practices that help employees in the long term. Obviously its not cool if you're going through it trying to find a job and struggling to pay bills, but know that it will turn around one day. Give Wall Street another quarter of flat revenue with meager profits and the big guns with multi-millions of shares (let alone dollars invested) will be looking for answers. The big institutional investors were your worst nightmare when times were tough - because they were the ones putting the pressure on CEO's to cut costs in wake of the recession. Now, these guys are your best friend ... seriously. They will be calling they guys everyday looking for growth over the previous quarter, and the CEO's know that they don't have the staff to grow the company. They know it. Its truly impossible, because even if they have an influx of orders or business - they don't have the staff available to handle all those requests.

Bottom line is that Wall Street companies will start hiring soon. Probably starting as soon as January 2011. I'm not talking about the cashier at the local Wal-Mart during Christmas (although an important job - not the type of hiring I'm talking about) We're talking the Google's, HP's, Yahoo's, eBay's and other huge California public companies starting to hire aggressively for high paying talent. Those are the jobs that move Wall Street and unemployment numbers - because they trickle down to give the guy at the corner market a job too. Even if you don't have the skills for those jobs, when they become available - it will mean lower skill jobs are on the way. Companies don't grow paying a guy 10 bucks an hour - you make money by hiring college grads that know what the next generation is going to buy. Future employees are waiting.

The Applebee's Resturants I've been to in and around Northern California have always been rocking, and to be honest, I think they would be a fun place to work. The company currently has a Restaurant Manager position available in Tracy, CA. Keep in mind that you must have a minimum of two years restaurant management experience (preferably casual dining) to join the Applebee's management team.

According to the job description, they offer a competitive salary, but they don't disclose the amount. Applebee's does spell out a very nice benefits package which includes: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life insurance, Disability insurance, Monthly bonus program, 401(k), and - the best of all Vacation. What I really like about the job is the 5 day work week, which might also mean you won't have to work over 40 hours a week. You will also see jobs available from Applebee's on the web under their company name, Apple by the Bay.

Stockton, CA San Joaquin County Fair & Long Term Job Impact

The San Joaquin County Fair always brings good food and good times to the central valley each year. It also gives a boost to Stockton, CA which has felt the economic downturn harder than most valley cities as its one of the largest in size.

The economic impact of an event like this can be measured in ticket sales and vendor participation, however there are longer lasting economic effects of the San Joaquin County Fair. Many local businesses benefit from exposure during the event and will gain customers during the process. Savvy businesses will be in a position to expand given the growth in customers following the County Fair.

There are also smaller segments of the economy that get a boost because of the event being in Stockton. The Stockton Record has more to write about and certainly a few ads to run for the big acts that will be playing concerts at the show. Local sign and banner companies probably have gotten a few orders for things that will be on display above vendor booths. Along those same lines are printing companies that specialize in business cards and flyers - which will also be handy for companies looking to market their business during the fair. You better believe wholesale orders of food and beer/beverages are on the rise given the massive quantities of both that will be consumed during the 5 days.

What does this mean for the job seeker?? At this point - you either have a job lined up to work the fair or you don't. However, the lasting effects of the profits and business connections that are made will hopefully leave some local companies in a position to expand during the summer. That means jobs for you.

The best job site in the San Joaquin Valley is 209 Valley Jobs - its free - updated and has a good mix of part & full time jobs. Be on the lookout for new job opportunities in Stockton, CA following the 150th San Joaquin County Fair as they may start popping up here soon after the event.

Get Out Of Debt: Employed or Unemployed - Make this a long term goal!

Consumers are spending more and the United States economy is coming back into the black after nearly 2 years of decline. Large swings in prices and demand for things like home and gasoline are what got this country, state and world in trouble in 2007 and 2008. For the most part people have learned the lessons of a recession and things are not 'snapping' back as some might think.

The bottom line is consumers are still paying off over-priced gasoline and home mortgage bills they committed to less than 2 years ago. Most people pay the minimum payments ... meaning they are paying interest on something they were over-charged for!! No wonder so many people are in over their heads in debt.

The goal of so many people is to pay their bills from month to month. They never save any money other than what their employer makes them ... and they more than likely spend more by using credit cards and loans - than they make in a month. Your goal in life should be TO HAVE CASH - NOT CREDIT. Look at any wealthy person in your town or country, they have money - not bills and loans to pay off. We all need a modest roof over our heads, and food to eat. But too many people get a house that's too expensive, a car that's too fancy and we spend way too much money on 'stuff' that ends up in the trash when it goes out of style.

Its not about being rich or living a million dollar lifestyle - but you can learn something from those people. They save their money. They invest in the stock market and have plenty of money in the bank to cover living expenses for years on ends. There are 1000's of stocks up more than 100% since November 2008 ... so they are even richer now. They own homes and cars - they don't pay the bank money for a car that's devalued the minute you dive it off the lot! Saving money isn't as fun as going out and buying the new iPad ... but investing in Apple 2 years ago (even a small amount of money) would mean you'd have enough to buy several iPads, iPhones and iAnything because the stock has soared.

The longer you live your life where you have just enough money at the end of the month to pay your bills - the longer it will be until you retire. You might as well run your credit up as high as you can because there is no mathematical way you will pay it off before you die. There will be no time in your life where you won't need a job or social security (if your lucky its around when you 'retire')  If you never own your own home outright, if you never pay off a car - if you never save money every month - you will never be able to retire.

Your goal in life needs to be get out of debt by reducing your month - to - month living expenses. Eliminate expensive mortgages by paying them off faster or moving to a more modest home. Pay off your car loans, credit card loans and other 'loans' as fast as you can. You are only making the rich richer when you buy things on credit. Take pride in having CASH invested in the stock market, a 401K or interest earning account. The more cash you have, the more money you can make each month from investing that money. Rich people make more off investing $100,000 than most people make in an entire year of working for someone else. Imagine if you had that kind of money to invest? You'd be able to retire one day!

Summer Employment in the Central Valley Region

As school takes a break for the summer many students and graduates will be looking for a job this summer. Many are only looking for temporary positions as they will return to school a few months from now and some are looking to start a career.

It happens to be at a time when the entire worlds economy is making a comeback from the recession that was lead by high gasoline prices and home values. California plays a vital role in not only the United States economy, but the entire world .. as the wealth of this state is larger than most countries. This state will play a large role in bringing wealth back to the entire world, not just California.

With that, employers are starting to see the more positive attitude of consumers in the Valley. If you walk through the Weberstown Mall or Sherwood Mall in Stockton, CA - you notice far more shoppers with bags of goodies than 12 months ago. Stores have closed, but the ones that survived are quality establishments or new ones that want to make a name for themselves in the community. What does this mean for you?

Jobs.

When customers have to tighten their belts and spend less, they don't mind standing in line a little longer and getting top notch customer service - they just want to save money. But imagine if money wasn't the top priority in your decision making! You want the cleanest store, the nicest staff and you don't want to wait in long lines because there are only 2 people working the store. Businesses know this, both old and new - and they are starting to hire more people. Which is good news for you!

Pacific University, Delta College, Stanislaus State, UC Merced and the high schools and colleges in the valley will be getting out soon for the summer. If you are currently looking for a job, now is the time to aggressively start applying for open positions!! These students are worried about final exams and tests ... not getting a job yet, and they will be entering the job market soon - making it even tougher to get a job.

SF Chronicle: Job Market May Have Hit Bottom

What goes up, must come down ... so is true with Unemployment Rates. The San Francisco Chronicle recently reported that based on January employment statistics, the job market may have hit bottom.

It means that things may get worse, but only marginally .... and the building blocks for recovery are there. Healthy, profitable businesses are still still running lean operations (notice the long lines at banks and popular department stores) This will eventually change as consumers start looking for a better customer experience and not necessarily the best price ...and retailers will be forced to increase staff to normal levels. Not to mention all the turn over from over-worked and stressed employees that are asked to do more than usual as companies stretch the capabilities of their workers.

If you haven't found a job in a while ... don't be discouraged. Keep looking, there are companies making lots of money taking advantage of a desperate (and cheap) labor market. Once they realize that 100's of applicants won't be applying to every opening they have, they will start to treat their workers better and the people that apply to work their better. Keep trying and keep looking.

Don't Forget To Spell Check Resumes

One of the funniest resume titles we've seen here at CA Jobs List was an email to us saying "Looking for a fool time job." It seems like common sense to spell check, but about 1 in 3 resumes have spelling or grammatical errors.

It's one thing to mess up in a blog post. It will happen here quite often. But to blow your chance with a potential employer simply because you didn't read over your resume and email is a shame. Especially now that the job market is so rough, you need to give yourself every opportunity to land that job in California that you are looking for.

If you need to spell check something, just type in "spell check" in your favorite search engine and use the one that you like the best. I use Orangoo, but there are a bunch out there. Orangoo is only able to spell checks documents and does not check for grammatical errors.... like "fool time job" which would not be caught by a spell checker alone.  Be sure to proof read your stuff!

Only 30 Minutes a Day to Improve Your Job Hunting

Have you spent time filling out resumes and forms only to not get hired? ...Or worse yet....not even an interview? This is common now in the California Job Market as employers feel empowered because they know there is a large population ready to work. Employers can be more selective as they know the next wave of resumes is only a job posting away.

The main thing to understand is to not take this personally. Businesses are in existence to make money, not make people feel good about themselves..that includes employees and potential employees. The best thing to do is take action each day to get yourself in front of these companies and get yourself noticed.

Instead of doing all my job hunting on one day or even a few days out of the month, I take 30 Minuets each day to work on something that will help me get my next job. Typically I start with going over my resume and adding things that I think are appropriate. Then I check to see if there are any new opportunities in my area. This is particularly important because so many applicants apply quickly to jobs, you want to be one of the first to apply especially if the job interests you. If you only search for jobs once a week or less...by the time you apply 100's if not 1,000's of people will have applied before you. After I locate a job I am qualified for, I apply and I am done for the day.

The next day I start the entire process over taking 30 minuets to find a new job. Instead of sitting around waiting for the previous employer to call me back (which as you know is rare these days) I can move onto another potential employer. After a week has passed I will have applied to at least 7 openings...which will increase my chances of getting hired and finding a new job.

So take 30 minuets each day to find a new job this month and you will be better prepared for the competitive job market that awaits.

California Company Profile: Target

When retail is doing well, Target is one of the easiest places in California to get a job. There is a Target Store in just about every CA city, and a store that size needs workers from entry level, to management.  The wages that Target pays are typical retail rates, and are competitive with other large retail chains.

Throughout 2009 and 2010, Target has been cutting back on employees and weekly hours for their workforce. Some low level Target Team Member employees sometimes receive less then a 10 hour work week. Part time Target Team Members sometimes feel the economic crunch because of this. Another tactic Target employs is not covering shifts for Team Members who "call off" or "no call, no show." Meaning many Target stores are left under staffed.

Target does have a dedicated human resource team that stresses Team Members take necessary breaks and lunches. Some have even criticized Target for being to Team Member friendly, in that they will hardly ever fire someone for repeated no call no shows. Some Target stores even have a policy that allows 3 per month!

If you are thinking about getting a job at a California Target keep these things in mind:

Does Target Drug Test: YES - 24 Hour Notice -
Does Target Backround Check: YES - Goes Back 7 Years -
Breaks: 1 paid every 4 hours -Do not have to clock out -
Lunches: 1 non-paid if working more then 4 1/2 hours. (30 minn-1 hour depending on store location)

Expected CA Target Hourly Wages:

Cashier: $8.00 - $9.00
Cart Attendant: $8.00 - $9.00
Guest Service Team Member:  $8.00 - $9.00
Photo Lab Team Member:  $8.50 - $10.00
Starbucks Team Member: $9.00 - $11.00
Food Avenue Team Member: $8.00 - $9.00
Guest Service Attendant (GSA): $8.50 - $10.00
Sales Floor: $8.00 - $9.00
Team Leader/Manager: $10.00 - $15.00

US Census Hiring in Many Los Angeles Cities

A good temporary position to apply for would be working for the 2010 US Census team. The Census receives massive federal funding, making temporary jobs plentiful, but you'll want to get your name in as soon as possible. Here are a few Los Angeles zip codes that have Census jobs available on CA Jobs List:
  • 90002
  • 90006
  • 90008
  • 90016
  • 90018
  • 90023
  • 90027
  • 90032
  • 90033
  • 90035
  • 90036
  • 90037
  • 90039
  • 90042
  • 90048
Other cities are hiring for Census workers as well. Be sure to check out CA Jobs List and 209 Valley Jobs for other California cities. I recently heard on a local Stockton, CA news telecast that they were paying $300 just for training to become a Census worker. That sounds like good money, and the hourly rate should be on the higher end for entry level positions.

Types of Nursing Degrees and Their Salaries

Many students look for a career in nursing. This is because of the vast career opportunities they get from a nursing degree. There are many ways of getting a nursing degree or a diploma.

It is a known fact that in all fields, higher the degree the better is the salary. And nursing is no exception! Salaries for RN is always much higher than a LPN or a LVN. So, if you are interested in making a career in nursing then you should look for ways to accelerate your RN salary by getting the appropriate educational qualification and of course experience.

Currently, nurses are very much in demand due to the on-going shortage of manpower. Qualified nurses have great career opportunities in government as well as private health care institutes across the country. Nurses not only have career potential but also salary potential if you have the right kind of degree and experience in this noble field.

Nursing salaries depend on various factors-

- Nursing degree and education: As much as the nursing degree is important to pave a smooth career path, the way in which you obtain the degree is equally important. You need to do some researching before you choose a nursing program. Different programs such as LPN degree, RN degree, Nursing diploma, Associate's degree, BSN degree are available which offer different nursing education with different time frames. Individuals need to choose the one which fits their career endeavor.

- Experience: Like any other profession, RN salary too depends on the years of experience the individual brings with them. If you have an impressive experience list of let's say 4-5 years, then it shouldn't be difficult for you to bring in good salary at a top health care institute.

- State and city where you work: This is a very important factor as far a RN salary goes. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurses have higher salaries in larger cities like New Your, Los Angeles or Chicago. They also have better benefits and perks when compared to smaller cities or towns. It's because the cost of living is much higher in larger cities.

Payscale.com conducted a survey on RN salaries in June 2009. Statistics below mention the hourly pay-scale of nurses from different states

California: $33.73
New York: 27.91
Texas: $25.95
Illinois: $25.84

- Specialty: You could do a nursing degree with specialty in mental health or psych nurse, certified RN anesthetist, certified nurse midwife, orthopedic nurse, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse, neonatal nurse, etc. The nursing specialty with prime focus will always fetch a higher salary.

Nursing is not a charity profession for sure and nurses get paid well too, for the service they render to mankind.
